DESCRIPTION

Velites are imperial conscripts who fight with sword, javelin, and no armor save a small buckler. In most military conflicts, they are positioned in front of an army to soften incoming infantry and absorb ranged attacks.

Outside of the military, velites are just sturdy townsfolk appropriate to the region. If there is not already a war in an area, a settlement can provide roughly 1 velite for every every 50 residents, hired at a rate of 2 sp per day. If the price is doubled, or a DC 25 Intimidate check is rolled, then 2 velites per 50 residents would be made available.
